Friday Focus – Cloud Picker
Fri Sep 12 2014
Cloud Picker coffee is Dublin’s first micro coffee roastery. Hand roasting coffee to order, they stock all kinds of amazing single origin coffees – and with coffee experts on hand to advise you how best to start your day well; this is one of the most exciting new businesses we’ve seen in a while.
A Micro Coffee Roastery? What Is This, You Say?
Cloud Picker’s coffee is roasted to order. They take orders at the beginning of the week, roast them during the week, and deliver on Fridays. They put the roast date on the bag, as opposed to a best before date. Coffee is best consumed within 4 – 6 weeks from roast date. Commercial roasters can or tend to put a one year shelf life on the bags…not all, but some!
They Have Been Where The Coffee Bean Comes From…
They have recently returned from Brazil, where they met the farmers, and subsequently import their Bob-o-Link organic coffee, both the natural and honeyed processed. Also they were in Thailand, where they established strong links with a coffee growing community there. The name Cloud Picker came from the journey through the clouds on the border of Thailand and Burma to see the coffee being picked – poetic or what?!
They Are All About The New And Amazing…
They buy seasonal coffees, that have a limited availability. These coffees become sought after, and eagerly anticipated year after year. All of their coffees are ethically sourced and are of the highest quality. They have created their first ‘seasonal espresso blend’ – again, there will be limited availability of this possibly for 4 months. At which point another one will be rolled out.
Third Wave Coffee
They are part of Third Wave Coffee – where coffee is considered an artisanal foodstuff, and we are part of the process of improving standards right through the chain from farmer to cup. They roast lighter, showcasing subtleties of flavour, varietal (of which there are about 50), process and growing region. Like wine, ‘terroir’ plays a part, with factors at origin having a direct impact on the cup profile, for example altitude, soil, rainfall, shade, processing techniques etc. All of this resulting in coffee with a clean, full cup taste.
Dublin Coffee & Tea Festival September
They will be exhibiting at the upcoming Coffee and Tea Festival in September, Dublin’s first, where we’ll be serving our range of unique coffees. Cloud Picker Co-founder, Peter Sztal, sensory judge, is involved with the Barista competitions held during the festival.
