Ingredients

    FOR THE KRISPIE TREATS:
  • 45g butter
  • 300g marshmallows
  • 210g puffed rice cereal
  • TO DECORATE:
  • Various coloured candymelts (we used green, orange, black & white)
  • Flavourless oil (sunflower, vegetable, extra light olive oil)
  • Candy eyes
  • Sprinkles
  • Candy moustaches

Method

  • 1. Line a large baking dish, approx. 23 x 33cm (9 x 12 inch) with a sheet of parchment paper.
  • 2. Place butter in a large pot set over medium heat. Once the butter has melted, add the marshmallows. Stir occasionally until marshmallows have melted and butter has been mixed in.
  • 3. Add the puffed rice and stir well to combine. Tip: We don’t recommend using a wooden spoon for this very sticky mixture, a silicon spoon or spatula is best.
  • 4. Transfer mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread out to all edges. The easiest way to press the mixture down so that it’s even is to generously butter your hands and press the surface with flat hands, palms down. The butter will stop the mixture from sticking to you.
  • 5. Leave to cool completely.
  • 6. Once cool, remove from tin and peel away the parchment paper. Tip: Don’t discard parchment, you can reuse it when decorating the treats.
  • 7. Using a large sharp knife, cut into oblong shapes, each one roughly 4 x 7cm. (Approximately 21 pieces in total). Arrange pieces on parchment paper for decorating.
  • 8. To decorate Frankenstein’s Monster:
  • 9. Place approx. 50g green candymelts into a small bowl and melt according to packets instructions (50g is enough to decorate about 1/3 of the krispie treats. We melted in the microwave in short bursts, stirring in between, just until melted). Once melted stir in a few drops of oil to loosen the mixture so it’s easy to spread.
  • 10. Using a teaspoon, spoon some of the green candymelts onto one end of a krispie treat, then using the back of the teaspoon, spread it out to cover about half of the treat. If using candy eyes, stick 2 eyes on the face while still wet. Place on paper and leave to set. (If not using candy eyes, you can do eyes with white and black candymelts. Leave green faces to set, then melt a few buttons of white candymelts, spoon into a piping bag and pipe 2 white blobs. Leave to set. Use melted black candymelts to do dots for pupils.)
  • 11. Once face is set, melt a few black candymelt buttons as instructed and stir in a few drops of oil to loosen, if needed. Spoon melted candymelts into a disposable piping bag. Cut the tip off the bag then pipe pointy hair, a mouth, small scar and neck bolts. Leave to set.
  • 12. To decorate spooky ghosts:
  • 13. Place approx. 50g white candymelts into a small bowl and melt according to packets instructions (50g is enough to decorate about 1/3 of the krispie treats. We melted in the microwave in short bursts, stirring in between, just until melted). Once melted stir in a few drops of oil to loosen the mixture so it’s easy to spread.
  • 14. Using a teaspoon, spoon some of the white candymelts onto one end of a krispie treat, then using the back of the teaspoon, spread it out to cover about 2/3 of the treat with a wavy bottom. If using candy eyes, stick 2 eyes on the face while still wet. Place on paper and leave to set. (If not using candy eyes, you can do eyes with white and black candymelts. Leave white to set, then spoon melted white candymelts into a piping bag and pipe 2 white blobs. Leave to set. Use melted black candymelts to do dots for pupils.)
  • 15. Once face is set, melt a few black candymelt buttons as instructed and stir in a few drops of oil to loosen, if needed. Spoon melted candymelts into a disposable piping bag. Cut the tip off the bag then pipe oval shapes for mouths.
  • 16. To decorate googly eyed monsters:
  • 17. Place approx. 50g orange (or any other colour you like) candymelts into a small bowl and melt according to packets instructions (50g is enough to decorate about 1/3 of the krispie treats. We melted in the microwave in short bursts, stirring in between, just until melted). Once melted stir in a few drops of oil to loosen the mixture so it’s easy to spread.
  • 18. Using a teaspoon, spoon some of the melted candymelts onto one end of a krispie treat, then using the back of the teaspoon, spread it out to cover about 2/3 of the treat. If using candy eyes, stick 1, 2 or 3 eyes on the face while still wet and use sprinkles for hair. We also used candy moustaches, stick these on while wet (optional). Place on paper and leave to set. (If not using candy eyes, you can do eyes with white and black candymelts. Leave faces to set, then melt a few buttons of white candymelts, spoon into a piping bag and pipe 2 white blobs. Leave to set. Use melted black candymelts to do dots for pupils.)
  • 19. Use black candymelts to pipe black moustaches onto monsters, alternatively, use black to pipe mouths or noses or any other monster features.
